Call Me Mike

You know how they say it only takes a second to develop a habit but a long time to break it?

When we get together for family functions, one of us is often saying "Mike... Mike!" to get his attention. It can sometimes take several tries, through no fault of his own. And in our house? Mike often has his cochlear implant on, so I can call to him "Mike!" to get his attention. However, he has no such luck with me so "Lee!" is almost never heard.

The consequence of all this? Jake seems to think "Mike!" is code for "hey you!". So when he wants Mama's attention? "Mike!" Gramma? "Mike!" Even Papa? "Mike!"

Even Mike gets a little annoyed -- "call me Daddy!!"

We have been working for quite a while to get Jake to stop calling everyone Mike, as funny as it is. This past weekend after calling to me (Mike!), Gramma, got him to call "Mama!" instead. That was good.

So if Jake yells "Mike!" at you, please don't be offended.

Mike's 30th!

We had a small birthday bash for Mike's 30th this year. It was mostly out-of-town guests who came, so that was special.

But before we get to that... Guthrie's hair color!!!!! Very hot.

Jake helped blow out the candles.
We had good food -- fish, corn, brown rice, salad and of course the chocolate-zucchini cake.
Even the cats had a party -- they got the leftover raw tuna. Probably their most expensive meal, ever. They loved it.

Hair FUN!

Today we decided to go to Bishops for haircuts. It is a walk-in place and the hairdressers all have cool/edgy hair and tattoos.

Bionic Mike

Today Mike went in for surgery to get a second cochlear implant, so he will have bilateral cochlear implants (one in each ear). He's doing this mainly to gain back the directional hearing he once had with his 2 hearing aids, and for job safety.

After surgery. He has to keep the bandage on for 48 hours. Not so great for sleeping.
Jake played with this massage chair while waiting at the pharmacy to pick up Mike's prescriptions.
Then we went to the grocery store to pick up some soup. Jake got this birthday cake sticker and where else would a birthday cake go but your mouth?
