Laurelhurst Park

Yesterday Jake and I met friends Pauline and Sophia at the Laurelhurst playground for some fun!

Jake and Sophia.

Being a monkey!

There are no pictures of Jake on a swing. When he was about a year old or so, he really enjoyed being in the swing, however, the last few months he has adamantly refused to like the swing. He'll sometimes let me put him in it, but as soon as he starts to swing, he reaches out for me and wants out.

Water is always so fascinating...
We walked to go see the duck pond. Jake asked to hold Sophia's hand. So sweet!
Sophia has such a bright smile!
Looking at the ducks.
The lilacs are in bloom! We love the way they smell.

For the self-nurture challenge, yesterday I finished reading the book, The Alchemist. Loved it. I think today I will try to watch a movie insted of working late in the evening like I did yesterday :)

Yogurt Photos

Mike took these series of photos of Jake while Jake was eating yogurt. Cute.

So yesterday I was planning to take time to read my book for my self-nurture challenge. That didn't happen. What did happen was I had a great time having some friends for dinner (adult conversation with someone who is not related to me!) and then Mike and I watched the movie Casino Royale after Jake went to bed. I really enjoyed that. Today has been busy but I got to meet a friend at a playground and talk while our kids ran around (more adult conversation with a non-relative). I might just take the time to read more of my book now... :)

Jamison Park

The three of us had such a nice day yesterday! We went to lunch at Blossoming Lotus.
It was finally sunny, beautiful, and warm in Portland. After lunch we went to Jamison Park in the Pearl. This park is so wonderful! The water pours out from the rocks and then when the water depth reaches a foot, the water shuts off and drains out. Then repeats. Can you spot Jake in this picture?
There he is! This was our first time here and it was a spontaneous decision to go after lunch so we didn't plan ahead to bring a swimsuit. His outer diaper cover worked just fine.
He was so happy!
Climbing the rocks.

The parents, enjoying the sun.
Hi!

And today, for my self-nurture challenge, I plan to spend time finishing the book I am reading, The Alchemist. Am really enjoying it.

Self-Nurture Challenge

My friend Savannah is a personal coach and works with women on how to juggle all the things we do in this life and to also do it in a way that is fulfilling and nurturing. Since this is the week leading up to Mother's day, she has issued a challenge for all mothers to do at least one thing daily to nurture themselves. You can read more about it in her own words here.

I have decided to join her challenge this week. I think I'm pretty good at doing something to care for myself each day, especially since Mike is so supportive in that regard, but I want to see how my week goes.

For today, I went for an awesome run this morning. Sure, this may fall under the category of "exercise" as in "a chore", and sometimes it does feel that way when I am trying to make it to the top of the hill right after I've left my house at the start of my run. But being outside, alone with my own thoughts, and then getting that runner's high in the end, and knowing I am caring for my body by running, that, to me, is nurturing myself.

So those of you who are mothers actively caring for children at home... what are YOU doing to nurture yourself each day this week? If you are a father, what are you doing to help your wife/partner nurture herself?

Each day this week I'll post what I've done that day to nurture myself.

Red Snowboarding Goggles

AKA The Cross-Country Trip of 2000.

Back in 2000 Mike and I were living in Rochester, New York. I had moved there for work and to be with Mike after graduating from college in Connecticut, and Mike had been attending RIT. We decided it was time to head home west.

Our one-year apartment lease was finally up, we shipped a lot of stuff home, then loaded my little 4-door Saturn sedan with as much stuff as we could. We even had 2 pairs of skis and a snowboard on the roof rack! We didn't want to drive with a U-haul. We had planned to leave on a Tuesday morning, however it was December, and a huge snow storm was blowing across the Midwest. If we left on Tuesday we would have driven right into it. We stayed put until the storm reached and passed Rochester on Thursday, so Thursday late afternoon we finally said goodbye and headed west.

The first evening we drove until we reached Springfield, Ohio. The roads weren't too bad, but we were grateful to have snow tires on the car anyway. We stayed in our first motel that night. In the car with us we had a little fish tank with a tiny frog inside, and each night we would have to bring Froggie into the motel with us to sleep so his water wouldn't freeze overnight. The second day we drove all day, occasionally stopping for food and bathroom breaks, saw the arch of St. Louis, and then made it to Springfield, Missouri (staying in "Springfield" two nights in a row was coincidence). We got a room in another motel, brought Froggie inside, and settled for another night. We were pretty tired so we didn't aim to wake up early. The next morning we woke up around 10am, turned on the TV, and gathered from the news that a second huge Midwest snow/ice storm was brewing and about to start blowing our way. EEEK!! We wasted no time grabbing our stuff, Froggie, and pointing the car west. I don't even think we bothered to get breakfast, just ate what we had in the car.

We continued to head south, to Oklahoma, (because we did not want to drive through the Rocky Mountain passes in December) where it started to snow. Oddly enough, it wasn't just snowing, but the snow was blowing horizontally across the road. Visibility on the road became very poor so traffic started slowing down to a crawl. Around that time we discovered that, for whatever reason, we had put Mike's red-tinted snowboarding goggles in the front passenger seat of the car. (For those of you who don't know, red-tinted goggles enable you to see MUCH more clearly in white-out conditions, as it cuts down on the glare.) Finding the goggles, I immediately put them on and discovered that I could see so much farther down the road (and consequently, drive faster). I kept moving into the left lane, passing cars that had drivers without the benefit of red-tinted snowboarding goggles, and continued west through the blowing snow. Drivers quickly figured out that I could somehow see better than they could, because it wasn't long before I had a whole line of cars following behind me, matching my speed. I was a mother duck with lots of mechanical ducklings on the road! That continued for an hour and a half, then suddenly we were in Texas, and the snow was gone. We'd made it! That night we slept in Amarillo, Texas (ugh) and the next morning we watched the news and found out that the highway we'd just driven on the day before was CLOSED. We were so thankful not to be stuck somewhere in Missouri or Oklahoma for a few days!

We continued to Flagstaff, Arizona then reached Los Angeles. We took a break from driving and from the cold weather and stayed with my aunt and uncle for 2 nights. I even borrowed a pair of shorts from my cousin so we could go walking on the beach! It was such a welcome change from all those times standing around in the freezing cold, putting gas in the car. Then we headed north, driving up 101 the whole way, stopping in Cresent City for a night before reaching Portland the next day. Overall the trip took us 9 days (8 days of driving). We really had a great time together.

Picture Time

He actually posed when I aimed the camera at him!
So cute at 22 months.
This is what he did when I asked him to "smile" or "show his teeth".

Can you see the resemblance?

Thursday Thirteen #11

Spring Cleaning

It is officially spring around here, despite being still a bit cold. Here are 13 things found while cleaning...

#1 Cleaning my office -- found a copy of our entire wedding ceremony. Awww. Was re-filed with our wedding photo album.

#2 Cleaning outside -- found a dead mouse. Right on our back porch. EWWWWWW!

#3 Cleaning outside -- found a cat collar with a tag for a cat named Sunny. Called the number on the tag and found out that the cat lives in one of the houses behind ours.

#4 We finally had Jake's car seat turned around from a rear-facing position to forward-facing. We kept it rear-facing as long as we could to ensure his neck muscles had the maximum amount of time to develop and strengthen in the (hopefully never) event of a car accident. But finally, his legs got too long and he was no longer sitting comfortably so we had it turned. We found lots and lots of food crumbs underneath. Ew.

#5 We finally found the bottle of screen cleaner liquid that we'd been looking for. Helpful for getting all those tiny little fingerprints off the computer screen!

#6 Found a little piece of paper with this tip "Potato Revival: if your potatoes have gone soft, soak them in cold water for an hour to crisp them up." Good advice as I have some potatoes that need this.

#7 Found this come through my mail slot the other day... (Sara "kaPOW!" this one is for you!). This is my favorite magazine and Wonder Woman has long been one of my favorite characters!
#8 Found my little one hiding in his play room the other day -- back deep where the pillows are...
#9 Found that scotch tape that I really needed around Christmas time instead of now.

#10 Found a new light bulb for the one that burned out last night. This was the first lightbulb to blow out since we moved into this house! Now I just have to start buying the CFL lightbulbs from Zola...

#11 Found a toy truck in my sock drawer.

#12 Finally changed the filter for our drinking water. Even though Portland has great, clean drinking water, there is still a lot of stuff in there that can be filtered out. Our system, MultiPure, is amazing (we've had it for 6 years). We found that the filter did need to be replaced! The brown filter on the left is what it looks like after 9 months of use. The white one is the brand-new replacement.
#13 Found lots of hummingbirds collecting nectar from the tree right outside my office window. Now that is a really nice, sure sign of spring!
